A survey by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism finds that seven in 10 Canadians trust the news coverage they receive on radio, television and online. GlobalNews Canada is one company taking this a step further, by integrating news production into a central control room.
Investigative news magazine series
There’s a new investigative news magazine series on the air and it’s called the ‘The New Reality’. The show was created by a former Global News reporter, and it’s a glitzy affair featuring long form investigative reports and documentaries. It’s a far cry from the ‘lifestyle’ oriented programming that the company is best known for.
A number of the company’s employees aren’t feeling so swoony. Some claim they were the target of retaliation after they raised the alarm over what they believe is a tone deaf coverage of the Justin Trudeau blackface scandal. Others claim the most recent round of layoffs is the company’s attempt to position the organisation for growth.
Reuters institute survey finds 71% of respondents trust their news coverage
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford has released its annual Digital News Report. This is a survey of 93,000 adults in 46 countries around the world. It measures the importance of news and the ways people are consuming it. Using the findings, it has developed a set of charts and graphs showing the state of news.
The report shows that social media is overtaking news websites as the most popular news source. In addition, the study found that older people have higher trust in news than their younger counterparts. However, it also found that misinformation is still a concern for a growing number of news consumers.
Local newscasts and titles are standardized following the BCTV model
In recent years, the news industry has come under pressure. The business model supporting local newspapers has failed to meet consumers’ needs. As a result, many papers have lost their editorial content and their reach in print. Public service journalism has also suffered.
Technology is transforming the news industry. A new generation of news organizations is able to use digital technology to improve the quality of their newscasts. These new news organizations are led by entrepreneurs who are committed to investing in long-term digital strategies.
One such company is Global. Since its founding in 1994, Global has specialized in local newscasts. It’s now a network that owns 64 television stations in 51 markets. And now, it’s launching a new Global TV website.
Canwest centralizes news production control room functions
CanWest Global Communications, a Canadian media conglomerate, has centralized news production control room functions. This enables them to produce one news story that reaches millions of readers.
As a major player in the Canadian newspaper market, CanWest has helped to shape the concentrated landscape. The company has a monopoly over media outlets in many Canadian cities. Among other things, CanWest has reduced the cost of producing news by leveraging economies of scale.
To this end, they have acquired hundreds of news outlets across the country. They have also made it their business to reach as many people as possible. By offering specific political allegiances, CanWest has helped Liberal-oriented political views reach millions of voters.
Toronto owned-and-operated station’s morning program (The Morning Show) extended by 30 minutes
The morning show for Global News Canada’s Toronto owned-and-operated station has been expanded by 30 minutes. That means the newscast will now be one hour long, as opposed to the current half-hour.
The new hour-long version of the show will feature lifestyle contributors and trending topics, as well as eight-minute segments every half-hour. It will air from Corus Quay studios in downtown Toronto.
The morning show features a blend of national and local content. It also includes local news inserts from Toronto.
It is broadcast from Corus Quay studios in the heart of downtown Toronto. In addition to The Morning Show, there is the evening edition, called Global News Night.
On-air talent, reporters, photographers, editors, and other news gathering positions will remain at the affected stations
News organizations, big and small, are facing increasing scrutiny for their news gathering techniques. This includes the ability of reporters to protect their sources. And in some cases, they fail to do so. In response, the federal courts have shown greater reluctance to recognize the reporter’s privilege.
